Tollygunge is a suburb of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was named after Tolly'sNullah, which flowed through the suburb. What is a hair transplant?
Hair transplantation is a surgical technique to implant hair on the scalp. The procedure takes place under anesthesia, i.e. you are not conscious during surgery. On average, 1,500–2,000 grafts are transplanted in one session. This means that around 40-60 hairs are implanted in each graft . A modern technique called FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is used in our clinic. We make small incisions of less than one centimeter, and after removal of the donor strip from the back /side/rear of the head under magnification, we implant hairs in each graft.
Is it a painful procedure?
There will be some discomfort, but with modern anesthesia there is no risk of feeling any pain. The hair transplant procedure lasts between 5 and 8 hours, during which time you can watch TV or read. You can go home on the same day or stay in our clinic if you want to recover more quickly.
What will my new hair look like?
It depends on how you want your hair to look like. It is important for us to make a soft and natural transition between the transplanted and non-transplanted hairs. But since we usually transplant the same number of hairs, even though they may be finer or thicker, it means that the implantation gives a better volume. Also, after surgery you need to continue to use hair loss treatments that will help the transplanted hairs become thicker over time.
How long does it take for my new hair to start growing?
After two weeks you can return to your normal daily routine and 1 month later your stitches will fall out. You can wash your hair, comb it and use a hairdryer. If the transplanted hairs fall out during this period of time, they will start growing back between 3-6 months after surgery.
How long does a transplant last? What if I don't want to have any more implants?
The results are permanent – you only have to have the procedure once. It is important however, that you continue to use hair loss treatments long after transplantation. The transplanted hairs will remain unchanged if you do not continue with these products.
Is it possible to see the scars?
The incisions are very small and are hidden in the natural hairline of the patient. They will disappear over time, but because the hair grows thicker after transplantation, there may be small scars that are not visible to others.
What is the difference between an FUE and a strip surgery?
The difference is in the method used to extract hair from the donor area (the part of your head where hair is removed). In FUE surgery, incisions are made with a small vacuum device that is inserted into the skin. The donor area must be shaved for this surgery. Strip surgeries are performed when an entire strip is removed from the back of the head under local anesthesia, i.e. you will feel pain during the surgery and it takes longer to heal.
How soon can I return to my normal routine before and after the surgery?
You can go home from the clinic on the same day or stay in our hotel if you want to recover more quickly. We recommend that you take it easy for one week after your hair transplant. After about two weeks, you can wash your hair with regular shampoo and conditioner. You can comb your hair and use a hairdryer, but it is important not to do any strenuous exercise. We will be happy to provide you with detailed instructions for aftercare before the surgery.
