Hair Transplant Steps and Stages
Hair transplant surgery is composed of different steps or stages. During each stage, the hair grafts are carefully transplanted to give you your desired result. The efficiency of any hair restoration surgery depends on how successfully all these steps are performed – so it’s important to choose a surgeon with a lot of experience and a well-established technique.
STEP 1 - PREPARATION & LOCAL ANESTHESIA
First, the donor area (the back of your scalp) will be prepared for surgery. This process may include shaving or cutting hair to obtain an area with appropriate density and size that matches the balding areas. The donor recipient sites are made in this part too.
The patient will be sedated with local anesthesia and a small diameter of hair-bearing skin is removed from the back and sides of the scalp. This block of tissue contains hundreds to thousands of individual hair follicles which are transplanted into the balding areas, one by one over time. The donor area can be closed using sutures, staples, surgical glue or surgical tape.
After this step is finished and the patient leaves the surgery center he will be able to return to his normal routine immediately. He can wash his hair four days later, but should keep it dry until then. There might be some mild discomfort, but pain medication prescribed by Dr.Rathore after surgery will take care of that.
STEP 2 - PLACEMENT & NURSING (DAY 1)
Dr.Rathore will then implant the donor hair follicles into the balding areas using a fine needle attached to micro-vascular surgical tubing called an instrument which attaches to a high speed motorized hand piece known as a FUE gun. This process is done under local anesthesia by numbing the scalp area with a spray, injection or cream that takes away all sensation in this region of the body.
Once the grafts are placed into their new location, they will be held there naturally by attaching to surrounding skin and tissue naturally. There may be some mild swelling, but this will gradually subside as the body reabsorbs the implanted grafts.
Once this step is finished and Dr.Rathore leaves, you can go home or stay at our facility for one night and return to work on Monday. During your recovery period (the first 10 days) it’s extremely important not to shampoo/wash your hair or get it wet at all until the 10 day period is over. This will give the newly transplanted grafts a chance to attach before they are exposed to water/soap/shampoo. The only time you should touch your scalp during this period is when Dr.Rathore has instructed you to connect your hair system and detach it periodically (to allow for air dry) but again, only when he says so.
STEP 3 - ATTACHMENT (DAYS 10-14)
Once the grafts are implanted in their new location they need time to attach through natural means. During this period it’s important not to wash your hair or get it wet at all, to give the newly transplanted grafts a chance to attach. The only time you should touch your scalp during this period is when Dr.Rathore has instructed you to connect and disconnect your hair system and detach it periodically (to allow for air dry) but again, only when he says so.
STEP 4 - START OF ACTIVE HEALING (DAY 15)
Once the 10-14 day attachment period is over, you may wash your hair again. However, now it’s time to connect and disconnect your hair system as directed by Dr.Rathore so that it can air out for 24 hours at a time. This will happen every day until all of the transplanted grafts have attached.
STEP 5 - ACTIVE HEALING (DAY 15-25)
After the initial attachment period is over, you may wash your hair again. If everything looks good, Dr.Rathore will instruct you to start wearing your new hair system properly. Again, this will happen for 24 hours at a time, every day.
STEP 6 - FULL ACTIVE HEALING (DAY 25-30)
After the initial attachment period is over, you may wash your hair again. If everything looks good, Dr.Rathore will instruct you to start wearing your new hair system properly for 24 hours at a time, every day. Thereafter, Dr.Rathore will instruct you to wear it for 48 hours at a time, every other day.
Eventually, you will start wearing your hair system all the time unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Rathore. This step is ongoing until your doctor feels that your transplanted grafts are well integrated and secure in their new location so he can remove the hair system.
