Hair Transplant Procedure
The technique of hair transplantation has become very popular in recent years. The procedure is done under local anesthetic and you are awake during the surgery. The surgeon harvests thin slivers of skin containing four to six hairs from a donor site, the back, sides or thighs. These slivers are transplanted into small incisions along the front hairline where the hair has been lost. The entire operation takes four or five hours if done in one stage, and six to eight hours if performed over two stages separated by a couple of weeks.

Details of the Procedure

The transplant procedure itself is known as the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) method or sometimes it is known as the Hair Piece procedure. It is a fairly new technique that was first used in Japan, then made its way to Europe and rapidly increased in popularity year after year. Most commonly, this procedure is used on patients who have male pattern baldness or are thinning on top.
This method allows for an unlimited supply of hair to be transplanted from areas on the back or side of your head where hair is usually stronger and healthier. In most cases, the results can be quite natural looking, which is why this method has become so popular.
Traditionally, hair transplantation surgery was very disfiguring because a large strip of skin containing multiple hairs would have to be removed from the visible part of the scalp.
