What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes stubborn body fat. It is called Liposuction because it literally “sucks out” fat from the body. Liposuction can be performed to remove fat from the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, neck, upper arms, calves, and back.

How does Liposuction work?

Before learning how Liposuction works, first one must know what exactly is fat, where it is located, and why it is problematic.

What is fat?

Fat is a tissue (a group of cells) that store energy and insulate the body. Fat is generally subcutaneous, meaning it is located under the skin. These deposits vary from gender to gender. In men, fat is generally deposited in the chest, abdomen, and buttocks. Whereas in women it is accumulated in the thighs, belly, hips, arms, waist, and buttocks. Subcutaneous fat has two layers: deep and superficial. During a Liposuction, fat is removed from the deep layer as it is less risky.

General Procedure of Liposuction

Liposuction requires local or general anesthesia depending on the complexity of the surgery, the patient’s health, and the surgeon’s preference. During the procedure, a tiny cut or incision is made onto the target area. A hollow tube, called a cannula, is inserted into the deep fat layer. Various techniques can be used to break down the fat. The most common technique involves injecting a sterile solution and a drug that causes fat cells to break down. The cannula is then used to suction out fat and fluids from the body.

Liposuction Techniques

  • Tumescent Liposuction- The most common technique of Liposuction. Involves injecting a sterile solution, anesthetic, and a drug to break down fat cells.
  • Dry Liposuction- Similar to Tumescent Liposuction but uses less fluid. It is not used widely today as it causes bleeding and pain.
  • Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction- uses ultraviolet rays to target and break down fat cells.
  • Layer-assisted Liposuction or SmartLipo- Uses High-Intensity Laser to break down fat.
  • Power-Assisted Liposuction- The inserted cannula is moved in rapid to and fro motion that produces vibrations that break down fat cells.
Though there are many different techniques, each one of them follows the same procedure for removing fat. That is it uses a thin hollow tube called a cannula, which is connected to a vacuum to suction out fat from the body. We have seen how Liposuction works. And though it might seem like a frightening procedure, it is a safe and easy method to remove body fat. And if done by a qualified surgeon, the side effects can be greatly minimized.
